Three-quarter length tights, or 'knickers' as they're known State-side (and increasingly here), are pretty much the ultimate in adaptable cycling bottoms.
They work just as well with leg warmers as shorts do (another layer of warmth around those knees is no bad thing), meaning they're good for those weird, trans-seasonal periods.
They also don't have any of the faff involved with bibs, and they, of course, give you a pleasant ankle draft during the spring. We love them. Here's our pick of the best on the market.
1. Castelli Womens Illumina Knicker AW14, £76.49
These Castelli Womens Illumina Knickers are made from a Thermoflex fabric, which means there perfect for autumnal conditions. They also feature silicon grips to keep them from riding up at the bottom, and a high waistband to prevent the opposite from happening too!
2. Primal Women's Covi Knickers, £62.99
We love how chic these Primal Women's Covi Knickers look. They feature flatlock stitching, silicone leg grippers and a APX chamois with 3 density foam layers. It'll feel like you're cycling on a soufflé.
3. Rapha Women's ¾ Tights, £150
Billed as being for "relaxed rides when you want the support and performance of tights but don’t want the inconvenience of bib shorts," these Rapha Women's ¾ Tights are bloomin' lovely. They have a 'v' shaped waistband so they don't dig into your stomach, a high rise back and reflective details. Check out our full review for more info.
4. Sportful Women's Vision Knickers, £27.99
These Sportful Women's Vision Knickers also have the coveted 'v' waistband to minimise any digging-in-ness that may occur during your ride, along with some silicone leg grippers. They're also quite a steal at the moment via Evans Cycles.
5. Northwave Crystal Women's ¾ length Cycling Tights, £36.26
We've reviewed some Northwave tights previously, and we thought they were really nicely made for their reasonable price. Let's just ignore the font. These Northwave Crystal Women's ¾ length Cycling Tights promise more of that quality, with reflective touches to boot.
6. Adidas Response Women's ¾ Length Cycling Tights, £45
These Adidas Response Women's ¾ Length Cycling Tights bring some much needed colour into the glum, all-black world of tights. Yes, it's only a touch of blue, but it's enough to make these Adidas numbers the only choice for those adverse to top-to-toe black.
7. Gore Bike Wear Contest Lady ¾ Tights, £32.45
Gore certainly know how to create a minimal, stylish item. The Gore Bike Wear Contest Lady ¾ Tights are no exception of course, with flat-lock seams and a great chamois ensuring they're perfect for a longer ride.
8. Assos HK.434 Lady S5 FI Lady Half Knicker, £128.99
