How to: Cycle With your Dog

Make sure you and your dog are ready to hit the road with these essential tips

If like us you use your bike as your main mode of day to day transport and you happen to own a dog, it is quite likely that you will want your beloved pooch to travel with you from time to time.

And the good news is that this is something that is completely possible. It is advisable to prepare adequately though as you definitely don’t want any mishaps while out on the road.

Here is a quick check list to get you and your furry friend on the road:

1. Dog Baskets: Dog specific baskets are a must. A regular basket will more than likely balk under the weight of the dog. Wicker dog baskets are available for both the front and rear of your bike. If you are afraid that your dog might leap out mid ride then opting one with a cage is advisable.

2. Let your dog get used to the basket. Start by walking with the bike and talking to your dog as you go then build it up with a couple of short practice spins. When your dog looks comfortable in the basket you can start upping the ante with longer journeys.

3. Get the dog used to riding over rougher terrain. It is likely that you will hot a pothole from time to time. Make sure you prepare your dog for this by riding over a couple of bumps repeatedly in a quiet spot.

4. Make sure you take your dog’s lead off before setting off as he/she could seriously injure themselves if they got it caught when hopping out of the basket.

5. If your dog is not the best at staying put opt for a carrier with a cage over it. You can then rest assured that your dog is safe and sound when in transit.

6. If your dog is over 30 pounds then a basket is not for you. For dogs up to 70 pounds opt for a trailer. Any heavier than that will need a cargo bike.

7. Treats will go a long way! Reward your dog after every successful ride.
