Ballot for 2014 RideLondon-Surrey 100 to open on Monday August 12

The online ballot for places in next year’s RideLondon-Surrey 100 sportive will open on Monday 12 August 2013.

The inaugural event, held last Sunday, saw riders complete a 100-mile route on closed roads, starting in the Olympic Park and heading out into the Surrey Hills before returning to central London for a grandstand finish on The Mall.

Some 15,883 riders finished the inaugural RideLondon-Surrey 100 on Sunday August 4

Now the date has been confirmed for the 2014 event, scheduled to take place on Sunday August 10 as part of the second running of the two-day Prudential RideLondon festival of cycling.

“I am delighted we’ve now been able to confirm the date for year two and certain that it is set to become a much-loved event every summer in the capital,” said Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

Johnson was one of 15,883 riders who completed this year’s sportive, crossing the finish line after eight hours, four minutes and 27 seconds in the saddle.

“I was a sloth a lot of the way but it was a stunning, stunning thing and who would have thought Surrey could be so stunningly beautiful,” said Johnson.

“I wouldn’t say it was a piece of cake but once we cracked Leith Hill I knew it was going to be okay.

“We are definitely going to see this again next year, whether you see me take part in it again next year is to be decided. It is a gradual step and the most important thing is to encourage people to cycle by making it safer.

The inaugural RideLondon sportive offered riders the unique opportunity to ride on closed roads in central London

“I hope the government will look at this and think what can we do around the country to get people onto the roads and make the roads safer.

“What is very encouraging about this is the way huge numbers of people are enjoying it. We want everybody to support cycling. It is a great thing for the city if you can get people off the road and onto bikes, but we have got to keep making it safer.
