Giro Rosa Final Stage: Anna Van Der Breggen Wins the Giro Rosa 2017

There were nine laps of an urban circuit followed by a steep volcanic climb

The incredible 10-day event came down to the final in Torre del Greco yesterday as the final stage of the 18th annual Giro Rosa kicked off.

Stage 10 Final: Torre del Greco loop – 124 km

The final course was 124km comprising of 9 laps of an 11.1km urban circuit before riders took on the enormous Monumento Vesuvio for the final category 2 climbs.

The race got underway with the peloton sticking together for the first 11.1km lap, however, as lap 2 began, action at the front of the group saw Kirsten Wild and Aude Biannic breakaway where they’ve gained a 20-second lead. After this, a chasing group formed going into lap 3.

At the beginning of lap 4, the two leaders dropped back into the chasing group as they maintained 50-seconds over the peloton, although, by then end of lap 4 the peloton re-grouped.

By kilometre 67km, 8 leaders gained a 60-second lead on the peloton as the riders finished the laps before they approached the Monumento Vesuvio Cat 2 climb. With 19km to go, the riders hit the climb and the chase was over as the peloton came together again.

Over the top of the climb and down the descent to the finish line, it was an intense few kilometres. It came down to Megan Guarnier taking the stage win with Anna van der Breggen taking the overall series win.
