Support Pro Women’s Cycling for the Price of a Sandwich: Specialized Lululemon & Project X

You can help support women's cycling. Pledge your support for Specialized Lululemon and you can help them keep their team strong for 2015.

With their inspiring lineup of riders, distinctive kit and impressive results, Specialized Lululemon are one of the most recognisable professional women’s road cycling teams on the circuit. For as little as £7, you can can give them the support they need to keep racing into 2015.

Professional women’s cycling has never been more popular and well covered than it is now. New races like the La Course and the Friends Life Women’s Tour have raised its profile, and organisations like British Cycling and the UCI have committed to increasing support and exposure.

The internet has had a huge impact, making it possible for the sport to reach new fans, allow supporters to follow races that aren’t televised, activists to gather support for campaigns, and teams like Wiggle Honda to become household names.

It’s also true that while things have improved a lot for the pro peloton, there is still a long way to go. Teams still struggle for funding, and usually earn much less than their male counterparts.

Now one of the top professional women’s road cycling teams is harnessing the power of the internet to change the way people interact with teams, by literally allowing them to help support them financially.

Specialized LuluLemon, currently ranked 5th in the world, have launched Project X on Indigogo, a crowdfunding website. They are asking for cycling fans to help them reach their target so they can support a full team of riders in the 2015 season.

The team has had a great year, taking part in the the inaugural Women’s Tour in May, with 5 riders ranked in the UCI top 30. Two of those, Lisa Brennauer and Evelyn Stevens, are in the top 15.

They currently have enough to secure the teams future, which is excellent news for the team, and for women’s cycling in general. However, they are short the full amount they hoped for, which means a reduced lineup.

If you want to support, you can pledge as little or as much as you like. There are loads of packages which means that as well as a sense of satisfaction in promoting women’s cycling, you can special edition race jerseys with your name emblazoned on the sleeve, the opportunity to join a brunch ride with members of the US-based team, sprint clinics to up your skills, and even (if you are feeling super generous) the chance to come on their winter training camp.

Today is the last day you can pledge your support on the Project X website.
