Lizzie Armitstead Escapes Post Race Crash with Bruises

Armitstead is out of the Women's Tour but will be back in time for Nationals

Stage one of the Aviva Women’s Tour concluded in a dramatic fashion yesterday in the sleepy seaside village of Aldeburgh. Crossing the line with her hands thrust in the air in victory, Lizzie Armitstead suffered an unfortunate incident just moments later as she lost control and barrelled into a group of photographers.

Spectators feared the worst as she was given air and gas as she lay immobile in the middle of the road, later to be carried into a waiting helicopter on a spinal board.

Rumour circulated about broken bones and crushed World Cup dreams, but thankfully it was confirmed late last night that Armitstead has escaped the incident with no more than a couple of bad bruises.

Taking to her twitter page last night Armitstead says she remembers little of the crash:

We hope Armitstead has a speedy recovery!
