European Track Championships 2013,Varnish secures bronze medal on Day 2

Great Britain continued their medal winning streak through to the second day of competition at the European Track Championships with Jess Varnish finishing third and scooping bronze in the women’s sprint.

Women’s Sprint

Two bronze medals for Varnish, in as many days

Varnish had already picked up a bronze medal on day one, with teammate Becky James in the women’s team sprint. Keen to double her medal tally, Vanish qualified two hundredths of a second ahead of new squad member, Victoria Williamson.

Both Varnish and Williamson made it through the early rounds safely, meeting one another in the quarter-finals. Varnish showed her dominance and stormed through to a place in the semis. Williamson battled through her rounds, and eventually finished seventh overall.

Although the women’s sprint event was won by German – Kristina Vogel, Varnish collected her second bronze after losing to home rider Elis Ligtlee in the semi-final, but winning both races in the minor final against Virginie Cueff of France.

Women’s Omnium

After a victorious ride in the women’s Team Pursuit the previous evening, day two saw Laura Trott back in action in the omnium.

As day two drew to a close, Trott saw herself sitting in third, even though she crashed in the elimination race.
