Review: Vaude Lauca Shorts

Debbie got down and dirty in the Vaude Lauca shorts, but what did she think of them?

The Vaude Lauca shorts are a comfortable lightweight casual riding short with robust environmental credentials.

The shorts are made from a light, quick-drying material with numerous technical features which satisfy anyone looking for a change pocket or added styling points. In total there are five pockets, which are useful for those cafe stops, storing a train ticket or key.

The waist band has an elastic adjustable button tab to enable a better fit. Full belt loops mean that by adding a belt (not included with the shorts) these do stay put, with none of that gaping that baggie shorts are sometimes known for.

The Vaude Lauca lightweight material boats a UV rating of 25, and meets the world’s most stringent standard for environment, consumer and workforce protection. It is also very comfortable. The material feels very lightweight but after being ridden on tough off road trails these have held up well and show no signs of weakness through wear or washing.

A chamois liner is also provided which is relatively lightweight, but nicely designed. For longer rides a more robust or familiar pair of lycra shorts may be preferred, but for a commute or pub trip the liners work perfectly well.

The leg length is slightly shorter than I would usually seek out, but did not ride up while riding so there were no revealing flesh gaps! I usually wear knee pads when riding off road and the Vaude Lauca shorts fit nicely above them. I do have short legs though, so anyone taller may want to try them out first for length.

I have a size 40 (medium) which were plenty large enough. I’m a size 12, so if you would like a slightly more fitted look I would size down.

These are not designed with a UK weather system in mind, so although work perfectly on dry days, you would want something a little more weatherproof on a showery day – or enjoy the quick drying properties!

Verdict

The Vaude Lauca shorts are well styled and great fitting casual shorts suitable for commuting, touring or full on mountain biking. These look at home on the trail or in the cafe.

Pros

– Great looking.

– Quick drying lightweight fabric.

– Great environmental credentials.

Con

– You may need to provide a belt for the perfect fit.
