Review: CUBE AM Women’s Mountain Bike Shorts with Liner

Laura's first impressions of the shorts were great, but did she end up loving or loathing them after her ride?

Impressive Mountain Biking Jerseys for 2015

To me, the brand Cube is all about bikes, so when these AM Shorts arrived for me to test I had to double check the label. Yes, they were definitely CUBE and they looked pretty cool!

CUBE are a German company, so I wasn’t surprised to see lots of practical and handy features on the shorts including an adjustable waistband, reinforced inner leg material and plenty of pockets, they also come with a liner short in coordinating colours.

The Cube AM short material is nice and stretchy, which makes the shorts comfortable to ride in; the leg length is a little on the short side meaning that the shorts rode up as I was riding, although I am 5’8” and most MTB shorts tend to be a bit short on me! The liner shorts are great – the low rise waist sat really comfortably on my hips and didn’t dig in.

The breathable material, with flatlock seams, has mesh side panels so I didn’t get too warm and the chamois is perfect for MTB’ing, not too bulky but still enough padding to prevent any saddle sores!

Unfortunately the great fit of the liner shorts isn’t the same on the outer shorts, which aren’t designed for female biker thighs – a common and frustrating design fault with many women’s biking short.  The shorts are a fairly tight fit on my thighs but super baggy on my waist.

It’s a shame about the sizing as the shorts are a really practical design; the stretchy material gives plenty when riding and the pockets are great for stashing essentials – especially the zip pocket on the thigh. The colour of the shorts is also a nice change from the black and grey of lots of biking shorts. The back of the shorts have a slightly higher cut, which if the thighs and waist were a better fit would be a great feature as the material would sit flat against the back and not cut in.

Overall, potentially a great short and if you have no hips or thighs probably a perfect fit but not quite up to the mark if you, like me, have a pair of thighs to be proud of!

Price: £79.99, available from Winstanley Bikes.

Pros
-Well-fitting and comfortable liner short
-Plenty of practical pockets

Cons
– The fit isn’t great for curvy girls (but probably good if you are more straight up and down)
-Not widely stocked
