Giro Feather 2014 women’s MTB helmet review

The Giro Feather helmet is one of Giro’s ‘Women’s Series’ helmet range, which covers all cycling disciplines. Knowing I have a ‘Giro shaped’ head I was looking forward to trying out the enduro style Feather helmet.

I was instantly impressed how light the helmet was straight out of the box, despite the fact that it looked more solid than my previous XC style helmets. Being a bit of a geek I weighed it, and it’s way less than 300g – all my other helmets are well over 300g.

The medium size fitted me well, with only a minor adjustment needed to the fitting dial. There is also an adjustment that can be done with the internal padding to affect the position of the helmet on your head. It worked well with my glasses, although I didn’t try it with goggles.

Although I liked the styling I was slightly concerned about the comfort of the helmet whilst riding with a rucksack. I thought that the base of the helmet at the back may come into contact with my rucksack, but this wasn’t the case.

The straps felt a little flimsy at first (although I liked the spotty styling on one side!) but as soon as I was riding with it, they caused no concern and felt nice and comfortable.

Along with the little spots in the strap, there is a nice unobtrusive ‘Women’s series’ logo on the helmet. There is nothing else which would indicate this was a ‘designed for women’ product, which is something I liked. Some of the other helmets in the range are more ‘girly’, so the option is there depending what suits you. I like the little nod to styling without being too obvious.

Although lacking in vents, I didn’t overheat in this helmet (although it is being used in January!). Giro talk about an internal airflow system which maintains cooling, but as I’ve suggested, this may be difficult to prove at the moment!

Verdict

I liked the styling and colour. The helmet was light and comfortable. I have also been complimented on it a number of times while testing it!
