8 of the Best Lip Balms for Cyclists

Do you hate the elements drying out, and cracking your lips? Well, we have the answer

Being outdoors on the bike, through all the weather conditions that are thrown at you, leaves your skin exposed and prone to damage.

Unless you’re a track cyclist, the cruel cold weather, rain and baking sun is unavoidable. All these conditions can be damaging to your beautiful skin, especially your lips, so it’s important to take care of them.

It may not even be the elements that cause you lip damage. If you’re like me, you bite your lips when your concentrating, or pedalling through that killer climb. Our lip-biting habits may, or may, not be known to us, but we certainly feel the effects of it.

Because we cyclists are outside adventurers, we need something with hydrating properties as well as SPF sun protection to help prevent sore cracked lips, which aren’t very pretty and certainly don’t feel too great.

Many people believe that lip balms are sticky and thick, but we’ve found some brilliant balms to hydrate your lips, and have them looking and feeling great.

Carmex Original Stick (£3)

Carmex is one of the leading brands for lip care, and their original stick is one of the best. This medicated balm helps moisturise your smackers with cocoa butter and petrolatum, whilst providing lasting protection.

In addition to its brilliant healing and hydrating properties, the Original Stick provides SPF 15 sun protection which reduces the risk of skin cancer. It doesn’t feel smeary or thick to put on, and the easy twist bottom allows for quick application… even with gloves on.

There are 6 tasty flavours to choose from: cherry, strawberry, lime, vanilla, pomegranate and original.

Blistex Intensive Moisturiser (£3)

Another popular skin care brand to make it into our top 8, is Blistex with their Intensive Moisturiser balm. It’s light to the touch, and easy to apply with their squeezy tube applicator.

This lip cream is perfect for those long days in the saddle with its long lasting hydrating formula made from shea butter and Allantoin. This recipe targets dry chapped areas whilst providing essential conditioning care for a soft feel.

Palmers Original Ultra Moisturising Lip Balm (£2)

Palmers came onto the market with their brilliant range of skincare products, specially formulated to help with skin tone and scars. They’ve grown to be a huge name in the beauty industry, and their Ultra Moisturising Lip Balm is just one of their products.

Using cocoa butter, vitamin E and SPF 15 properties, this lip balm is great for protecting you against drying out, sun damage and wind-burnt lips. It’s small and convenient, and easy to apply.

Nivea Soothe and Protect (£2.50)

With over 150 years of experience in the skincare beauty industry, Nivea offer a wide range of products to protect your skin and have you feeling great.

Your lips are no exception, and their Soothe and Protect stick is one of our favourites for being light, protective and extremely hydrating… especially for those bitter cold rides.

Nuxe Reve de Miel Baume (£10)

Looking for something a little more lip loving? Then the Nuxe Reve de Miel Baume is for you. It’s ultra nourishing and its repairing ingredients are perfect for those dry and sore lips that need some essential TLC.

Kiehl’s Lip Balm (£10)

For those that fancy something a little more glossy, Kiehl’s #1 lip balm is more like a creamy butter with aloe vera ingredients to soothe the sorest of lips. It’s soft almond oil leaves your lips feeling smooth, soft and glossy.

Lab Series (£8)

Lab Series is marketed at men, but who cares? Many of us ride men’s bikes and wear men’s cycling kit, so lip care is no different…

This balm moisturises, softens and repairs those chapped lips, without leaving a shiny sheen. The subtle minty flavour is refreshing throughout the day, and the matte finish leaves your lips invisibly softer.

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm (£7.25)

Last, but not least, on our lip balm round-up is Jack Black’s Intense Therapy Lip Balm.

This soft balm protects your lips from the harsh wind and sun exposure that we often endure whilst riding. Containing antioxidants and moisturising properties, we think this balm is great for providing lasting hydration and comfort.

It’s important to protect you delicate skin against the elements, and as cyclists, we’ll ride through anything.

Try and implement a daily lip care routine, even when you’re not on the bike, and always keep a small stick of hydration in your cycling essentials pack.
