Sphinx pose – cycling yoga

Yoga for cyclists: Sphinx Pose by Total Women’s Cycling a Road Cycling video by Total Women’s Cycling

The sphinx pose is really useful for cyclists, as it starts to undo all the forward bending associated with cycling. It gently opens up the front of the body and lengthens the spine.

How to do the Sphinx pose:

  • Start by lying on your front
  • Bring the forearms to the floor, elbows underneath the shoulders
  • Lift up out of the elbows drawing the shoulders down as you gently lift the chest forwards
  • Firm the lower belly in towards the spine to protect the lower back
  • Press the tailbone down towards the floor
  • Keep extending through the legs and keep the tops of the feet on the floor
  • Stay here for up to 10 breaths.

What to watch out for:

  • Make sure the shoulders stay down away from the ears
  • If you feel any pinching in the lower back make sure you are drawing the lower belly in, if it continues then release the pose.
