A  smart option for whenever things take a chilly turn on urban rides, your commute or country jaunts, the Vulpine Softshell Gilet is packed with features and functionality.

The Vulpine Softshell Gilet is far too effective a piece of kit to wear now in the middle of summer, but come autumn I’ll be throwing this on, a lot. Despite being sleeveless, it’s certainly cosy and is windproof, breathable and water-resistant – though I’ve always wondered the point of wearing a gilet in the rain, and this is my first. Do you just have to accept the fact that your arms are going to get wet? Or are they are only for days when no rain is forecast?

Not letting that sartorial meteorological conundrum get in my way, the Vulpine Softshell Gilet has impressed with its finish. Made from a classic softshell material backed with a close fleece lining, wearing this instantly gives the impression that your core body temperature has risen a couple of degrees. Especially when it’s zipped up to your neck and the magnetic closures have secured the collar in place.

Seven pockets – two deep hand pockets at the front, two large inside pockets plus two large cargo pockets, one with Vulpine’s signature magnetic closure, the other open to slot a D-lock into, and a zipped key and card pocket – are all fleece lined and a decent size.

Styling is finished off with reflective strips over the shoulders, adjustable drawstring adjustment round the hem and subtle Vulpine logos across the neck, on the rear pocket and on the chest. All in all, it’s a very neat package – as you’d expect for the price of £115.

There really is little to fault – it’s perhaps on the thick side to stuff into a jersey pocket if you want to take it off mid-ride, but that’s about it.

Just the job for keeping your core warm, snug and dry while looking smart
