5 Reasons to Buy a Dutch Bike

Thinking of adding an N+1? Why not think about going Dutch...

Dutch bikes are a work of art in themselves. They allow the rider to swing a leg over in basically any attire –  even if it’s most impractical. T

he reassuring chain and mud guards mean that there is not chance of getting an oil slick down your leg and the upright position is so casual it almost looks like you could drink a cup of tea as you ride along (although we don’t recommend this!)

5 Celebrities who make Bike Style Look Effortless

Easy-to-ride

The ‘sit-up’ style of these bikes means that your body is in less of an aggressive position compared with the hunched road bike physique, for example.

Sitting upright also allows your to have greater visibility over the top of traffic and into the distance. The saddles are also normally broader and more cushioned, and because you’re sitting back on your sit bones, you’re less likely to need to rely on padded shorts to avoid feeling saddle-sore.

Style factor

Cycle-style is a big factor of the Dutch bike – mostly because the safety features such as the chain cover means your less likely to get your trouser leg caught up in the fray nor will you get covered in oil.

This means that what you can wear on the bike is not so much restricted as proved by these heel-wearing celebrities. Dutch bikes also tend to have quite substantial mud guards over the wheels to minimise splash back.

And of course, the bikes themselves are super stylish – they’re usually available in varying colours, with vintage bells and even the mud guards add an aesthetic element.

Cheap maintenance

Dutch bikes are a good option if you’re looking to buy second hand, just makes sure that the gears and brakes are in good condition.

You can buy one from new from between about £150-£600, and they often hold onto their value very well if you do choose to pass it on one way.

Once you have your bike, maintenance won’t cost you too much due to the more robust design of the bike. Because all the components are covered up, thing like the cogs and the chain won’t be as exposed to the elements and the tyres are generally sturdy and not too prone to punctures either.

Pannier and basket options

Dutch bikes have some wonderful options for accessories. Your bike can carry any extra bags you might have either with panniers or by affixing a basket to the front.

The upright position will also mean that you can wear your handbag strap crossed over and not have that annoying feeling when it flops forward as you do on other bikes. The added bonus there is you’ll avoid getting a sweaty back from having to cycle with a backpack!
