Review: Abus Cyclonaut Signature Helmet

The Abus Cyclonaut Helmet is a sleek urban helmet, perfect for London's city streets.

– Grey wool-esque finish.
– Flat cap look.
– Adjustable helmet sizing knob in the back.
– Easy to use even with winter gloves on.
– Set sized chin straps.
– Ponytail cut out.

The Abus Cyclonaut Signature helmet provides a stylish alternative to run of the mill bike helmets. It fits well, it’s light, and grey matches pretty much everything. You can get it in different muted wool-esque prints, so all you fashionistas don’t have to worry about looking like a roadie gone wrong.

The helmet doesn’t have any holes, so it’s great in winter, keeping the cold off your head. The padding is also removable and machine-washable. I can imagine that it wouldn’t be as comfortable to wear in summer, but that doesn’t really exist in the UK, so it’s not a big deal.

The shape is such that it mimics a flat cap style, so that the front is sloped down and it goes up a bit higher in the back. The styrofoam seems to be a bit thicker than usual, so if I’m wearing a backpack I can’t put my head back as far as I could with a race helmet. It’s better suited for use on a sit-up-and-beg bicycle, rather than a forward leaning road bike.

The chin straps are already sized so you don’t have to worry about getting them around your ears in the right spot like on regular bike helmets. The sizing knob in the back is easy to adjust, even with giant winter gloves on. And it’s got a bit cut out in the back for a ponytail (details people!)

I got loads of compliments on the helmet while I was wearing it – it’s distinctive, but not offendingly so. Perfect for the rider looking for some safety reassurance while remaining stylish. As someone who doesn’t generally wear a helmet cycling about town, I’d consider using it on a regular basis.

Pros: Sleek, urban, blends in with your wardrobe, warm in winter.

Cons: it still feels like you’re wearing a helmet, probably not good in warmer weather, chin strap pad is a bit fiddly, not waterproof.

Overall score: 4/5.
