Selle Italia Saddle Range

Selle Italia provide bike seats for road cyclists, mountain bikers, commuters, as well as time trialists and track riders.

The range is vast and we couldn’t give you a breakdown of every model, but there are four key seats that see the most interest from female riders – these are the SLR Lady Flow, Diva Gel Flow, Lady Gel Flow and Kronos Tekno Flow.

SLR Lady Flow

This is a lightweight saddle that suits a rider who sits in an aggressive position – the oversized cut-out providing relief from soft tissue compression that is all too often a ride killer for women.

A fully female specific version of the men’s SLR flow, the silicone inserts around the cutout vary in thickness to provide extra comfort where it’s needed, and the overall weight is 187 grams.

This is the favourite road bike saddle of TWC’s current editor, Michelle – it took quite some time to hunt this one down, and she’s outlined the journey to finding ‘saddle perfection’ here. Of the SLR flow, she said: “I can ride all day, even all day every day of the week (IF my legs will allow!) in comfort on this saddle.”

The SLR is all about preventing soft tissue discomfort, and it probably won’t suit riders who adopt a more upright position – but that would more than likely be spotted in an ID Match fit examination before purchase, if you buy from a bricks and mortar dealer as opposed to online.

A wider channel usually means more soft tissue relief

Diva Gel Flow

A firm favourite among female cyclists, the Diva Gel Flow is designed to suit road and off-road riders, and features their Gel Flow inserts under the sit bones and around the cut out in varying widths to provide a soft base, whilst the cut out relieves pressure. This one also features Selle Italia’s Elastomer suspension shock absorber system for extra support and protection over the bumps.

The option chosen my former Editor at TWC, Kirsty Ho-Fat, she rode it for 4,000 miles around the coast of Britain. Reviewing this perch in 2014, TWC’s Lorena Jones called this one: “Super comfortable and probably the closest you can get to one size fits all – a godsend for those new to cycling or considering a few extra miles in the saddle.”

This option will be best for someone who adopts a more upright position, again something that would be picked up in an ID Fit. At 255g, it’s hardly a heavyweight too – and has a lovely premium feel.

More padding at the rear is generally better for more upright riders

Lady Gel Flow

The Lady Gel Flow will suit a similar rider to the Diva, the key difference being a slightly wider rear end and differently shaped cut out. The extra padding towards the back of this saddle makes it a better choice for someone resting more on their sit bones than an aggressive rider leaning forwards over the handlebars.

This one weighs a little bit more, at 280g, but should provide plenty of support for those suffering with sit bone tenderness – and it’s appropriate once again for roadies, commuters and mountain bikers.

Kronos Tekno Flow

Used for the first time in the 2015 Tour de France, the Kronos Tekno Flow is a beast of a very different style. A unisex option, the rider’s soft tissue isn’t really touching the surface. Women as a rule have wider sit bones, but otherwise there’s not much difference until we get to soft tissue – so all saddles in this style offer unisex options only with varying widths available.

The Kronos is designed for road use, and perfect for those leaning forward in a very aggressive position – either in time trials, or on the track. Our Editor Michelle uses one on her track bike, and is an avid fan.

The most recent version of the saddle sees the addition of a durable Fibra-Tek fabric covering the surface, which works as an anti-slip system to keep the rider in their ideal position.

NEW IN

Selle Italia surprised us recently with a brand new member if the family: the Donna Gel Flow. We’ve not had a chance to try it yet, but it looks to be an extra soft padded option to bolster the existing Diva Gel and Lady Gel Flow, with a slightly wider cut out.

Designed for road and off-road use, it’s yet another example of Selle Italia making sure they’ve got a great selection on offer for women – and a sign we can only expect more to come.

Of course, there are more options – but the first three are by far the most popular among women, and the Kronos adopts a style that’s proving to be very popular among racing women.
