Giro Rosa: Everything you Need to Know

Giro Rosa - the biggest women's road cycling race is back

Yellow mania has officially hit the UK. Everyone has gone Tour de France mad and who can blame them, it’s going to be one hell of a weekend. And to add to the excitement we also have some incredible women’s racing to look forward to over the next ten days too.

The biggest stage race of the year, and the only remaining Grand Tour for women, the Giro Rosa, a nine-stage event will take place from the 4-13 July. The race will attract the biggest names in female cycling in the world and promises to provide some nail biting excitement.

How to follow the Giro Rosa 2014:

The Giro Rosa is one of the few races with television coverage. There will be an hour of race highlights on RAI Sport 2 every day which is also steamed online.

These highlights will also be available on the race website.

Another good resource for up to the minute action is Twitter, keep an eye on #GiroRosa for the most comprehensive information.

Who’s Riding Giro Rosa 2014?

Giro Rosa attracts the biggest names in women’s cycling. There is no doubt that all eyes will be on the Rabo Liv team and on the phenomenon that is Marianne Vos. Elsewhere we are also looking forward to seeing Rossella Ratto (Estado de Mexico-Faren) who pulled a few tricks from the bag during the Women’s Tour , Italy’s very own Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda) who is arguably one of the world’s most formidable sprinters and of course our very own Emma Pooley who has just been crowned National Time Trial Champion.

The Giro Rosa Jerseys:

The Pink Jersey – General Classification

This is the most coveted jersey of all, awarded to the rider with the shortest aggregate time over the course of the race.

Purple Jersey – Points Classification

Otherwise known as the sprinters jersey this goes to the rider with the highest number of accumulated points. If this person is the same as the General Classification leader it is awarded to the rider with the second most amount of points.

Green Jersey – Queen of the Mountain

This goes to the rider with the highest number of points gained from the route’s designated Queen of the Mountain points.

White Jersey – Youth Classification

Awarded to the rider with the high general classification who was born after 1 January 1991.

Blue Jersey – Best Italian

This goes to the Italian rider who is highest in general classification.
